• Meta has a new free AI image generator, trained on (not a shocker) all the images that are part of Instagram / Facebook - seemingly good at people & animals, but not much else

• Would you let AI insult you? A new physical AI art installation in Germany and a GREAT video about the project linked

• Want to see what images are in the LAION dataset, which was used to power Stable Diffusion? Someone parsed the files and made a website, giving you access to browse a subset of 1.3 billion LAION images. Super interesting!

• Runway is set to to include Getty Images into its AI video generation tool (an effort toward more “commercially safe” sourcing from Runway) 

• New AI designer Tilly Talbot on display in Miami

• 7 more artists join the class action law suit against AI art generator companies, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Runway, DeviantArt, including Greg Rutkowski (his tweet)

Not art, still noteworthy

• Google launches Gemini - a new foundational AI model that scores better than GPT-4 in several key areas. It’s built from the ground-up to be multi-modal (i.e. image, text, video, audio all part of the same initial soup, instead of separate sources stitched together later) (Twitter announcement video, great background music)

• IBM, Meta, Dell, HuggingFace, AMD, Harvard, Sony and 43 others join “AI Alliance” - a new group committed to keeping AI advances open, instead of closed - ArsTechnica explainer article

• ChatGPT is one year old, here’s what happened in the last 365 days (wild)

• Deepfake nude images prompt action (soon, legislation) from parents and lawmakers

• The EU’s AI rules are in final stage of getting written and approved - a small overview and history 

• Elon looking to raise a full billy $1B for xAI, filling shows

AI is awesome

• Look at this new AI-powered weed-picking machine used on an Onion farm in Sweden. Uses computer vision + steel fingers to pluck weeds. Reduces use of harmful herbicides by 70%
